Last week, headlines echoed Malaysia’s ranking as the second lowest in work-life balance among 60 nations with the highest gross domestic product (GDP), according to a recent study by global human resource services company, Remote. In today’s era where sustainable practices are paramount, businesses must recognize that employee well-being is integral to long-term success. Today, our focus is on enhancing employee mental well-being in the workplace and how integrating mental health initiatives within the ESG framework can foster a healthier, more productive workforce.
Employee mental health is not just a personal concern, it has profound implications for organizational performance. Stress, anxiety, and depression can lead to decreased productivity, higher absenteeism, and increased turnover rates. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), depression and anxiety cost the global economy an estimated $1 trillion per year in lost productivity. Besides, another study by Relate Mental Health Malaysia found that poor mental health costs the nation approximately RM 14.46 billion annually due to lost productivity and medical expenses. This highlights the urgent need for businesses to address mental health as part of their ESG strategies.
The importance of prioritizing the well-being of employees revolves around several key benefits (1) Productivity: Mentally healthy employees are more engaged, creative, and motivated, leading to higher productivity, (2) Retention: A supportive work environment that prioritizes mental health can improve employee retention, reducing recruitment and training costs and (3) Reputation: Companies that care for their employees’ mental health build a positive reputation, attracting top talent and loyal customers.
For those organizations that are toying with the idea of fostering workplace mental wellness, here are some points aligned with your social responsibilities that you may wish to consider:
1. First and foremost, supporting employee well-being begins by recognizing their personal lives and stressors outside of work. Encouraging work-life balance through options like flexible work arrangements and realistic workplace expectations, along with promoting the use of vacation days and disconnecting from work after hours, fosters a healthier and more satisfied workforce.
2. Encouraging regular breaks throughout the workday, where employees have the opportunity to relax, converse, and socialize, can significantly enhance their mental well-being. These breaks reduce stress, increase productivity, and cultivate a collaborative workplace culture. It’s also crucial for managers and senior staff to lead by example, demonstrating the importance of taking breaks for themselves.
3. Building strong social connections within the workplace is essential for maintaining a healthy organization. Social gatherings, team-building exercises, retreats, and mentorship programs offer effective ways for employees to bond, collaborate, and support each other, thereby enhancing their emotional well-being and overall workplace morale.
4. Assist employees with regular feedback and assessment. By conducting regular surveys or feedback sessions to gauge employee satisfaction with work-life balance initiatives and mental health support. Organizations can use this feedback to continuously improve and adapt policies
5. Community engagement. Organizations can organize team-building activities, social events, or volunteer opportunities that promote a sense of community and belonging among employees. Strong social connections can positively impact mental well-being.
Several companies in Malaysia are already leading the way in integrating mental health into their ESG strategies. For instance, Maybank has implemented various mental health initiatives, including providing access to mental health professionals, conducting wellness programs, and promoting a supportive work environment. These efforts have not only improved employee well-being but also enhanced the company’s overall ESG performance.
By integrating these points, businesses not only enhance employee well-being but also strengthen their ESG performance. Prioritizing mental health is a critical component of building a sustainable and resilient organization. Companies that invest in their employees’ mental health are better positioned to thrive in the long run, fostering a positive workplace culture and driving long-term success.
